What is Spirulina and Chlorella?
These two powerful superfoods have been increasingly popular in recent years. Spirulina and Chlorella are forms of blue green micro-algae that are highly nutritious and safe to eat for most people. You can take both of these green superfoods in capsule or powder form.
Benefits of Spirulina and Chlorella
Both Spirulina and Chlorella are full of protein and numerous antioxidants such as carotenoids and phenolic compounds. They are also the most chlorophyll-rich food sources to be found in nature and they are packed with vitamins, minerals and fibers.
Spirulina
Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae that is able to grow in both fresh and salt water. Spirulina has been used as a food source in Mexico and Africa since approximately 1300 AD and is believed to be one of the oldest life forms on Earth.
Spirulina has been used in the treatment of repairing liver damage as a result of overconsumption of animal protein and refined foods, malnutrition, alcoholism and the consumption of nutrient-destroying foods and drugs. It helps with anaemia, hepatitis, gastritis, diabetes and hypoglycaemia. Increases mental capacity do to its phycocyanin content, by drawing together amino acids for the formation of neurotransmitters.
Spirulina is cooling, increases yin fluids, detoxifies and kidney and the liver, builds and enriches the blood, cleanses the arteries and enhances intestinal flora. It is good for overcoming deficiencies and for those with problems digesting.
Chlorella
Chlorella is a single cell micro-algae naturally grown in freshwater and originated from Taiwan and Japan, although it is now grown in large quantities in many countries such us Germany. It is high in Vitamin A, B12, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc. It contains 20 amino acids and glycoproteins, large quantities of nucleic acid and CGF, among other things.
This CGF, or Chlorella Growth Factor, which was isolated in the 1950’s, is related to the special nature of chlorella’s nucleic acid. Nucleic acid (RNA/DNA) is responsible for the renewal, growth and repair at cellular level. Nucleic acid naturally decreases with age therefore chlorella is considered as an anti-ageing supplement.
The high chlorophyll content (which is twice as abundant in chlorella as in spirulina) protects the body against ultra violet radiation treatments as well as removing radioactive particles from the body. Therefore it’s used to detoxify against radiation and chemotherapy in cancer sufferers. In fact, chlorella absorbs toxin in the body, it binds to heavy metals and helps their elimination, preventing their absorption during the intake of food.
How Spirulina and Chlorella can support your spring detox journey?
Sprirulina is one of the most nutrient dense foods in the world and chlorella helps boost immunity, detox heavy metals and support fat loss. They both can assist with chelating, which means they can bind to and remove heavy metals from the body, particularly in our blood. Both algae have been proven effective at detoxifying everything from aluminum to cadmium. Adding these two superfoods into your diet has amazing benefits from curing diseases to boosting immunity.
Caution
Sprirulina and chlorella are powerful detoxifier so it is important to start with a small dose and gradually work your way up so that you can see how your body responds. Some detoxification reactions that can possibly occur when consuming these algae are: a low-grade fever, dark green waste, excessive gas, restlessness, breakouts or itchy skin, and or sleepiness. These symptoms are temporary and are evidence that your body is responding to it.
